More details about the Artists that will be with us on the day:

A small Part of the Deering Banjos Story:
Greg Deering began learning woodworking from his father at the age of two by watching him build model airplanes. Growing up in San Diego, he received his first tools and tool box which he had carefully laid out in his wagon on his third birthday. Many of these tools he still has today. That is how important this was to him. It was a career in the making.

At the age of 13, Greg purchased his first banjo by investing pay from his paper route into a used banjo. He learned to play Kingston Trio songs on his banjo with his best friend Tom playing guitar.

Greg made his first banjo as an industrial arts major at San Diego State College. In 1970, at 19 years of age he joined other enterprising young college students at the American Dream Co-Op and began doing instrument repairs and building banjos. This co-op would become the birth place of at least four now world renowned instrument manufacturers – a true tribute to the concept of the American dream! The American dream became the theme of Greg’s life when he and Janet started the Deering Banjo Company in 1975 as a family business. Together they not only raised two children but built, piece by piece, the Deering banjo factory.

Today, over 40 years later, the Deering Banjo Company has seen many a milestone including the launch of the Goodtime Series in 1997, the relocation to a new 18,000 sq.ft. premises in 2001 and the launch of the Eagle II in 2009, a breakthrough in banjo tone with the development of the new Twenty-Ten™ tone ring.

In its young 41 year life, Deering has delivered the finest hand built American instruments to over 100,000 happy musicians and counting… one banjo at a time.

The Kruger Brothers:
Originally from Switzerland, where the trio first formed, Jens Krüger and Uwe Krüger later moved to Wilkes County, NC. The brothers began playing North American folk music at an early age and were particularly inspired by recordings of Doc Watson, Flatt and Scruggs, Bill Monroe, and other progenitors of country, bluegrass and folk music. Their first public performances were as a duo, busking on the streets of cities throughout eastern and western Europe. Later, after gaining a recording contract as well as a radio show on SRG SSR, the Swiss public broadcaster, they teamed up with bass player Joel Landsberg, inaugurating a trio that has been playing professionally together since 1995. Landsberg is an American citizen from New York, NY. The first recording project to include Landsberg was Behind the Barn, Vol. 2, which was released in 1997.

Today the group is highly regarded within the world of acoustic music in North America, in particular by those within the industry. They have also gained the attention of some of the musicians, including Bill Monroe, Doc Watson, Tut Taylor, and Bobby Hicks, that once served as models. Watson once remarked that, “The Kruger Brothers are just about as fine a band as I’ve ever played with. … I love to play music with them.”

Angelina Carberry:
Angelina Carberry continues a long tradition of handed-down Irish traditional music within the Carberry family which goes back generations in County Longford, Ireland. Angelina is without question one of the finest Irish tenor banjo players that has graced modern times. Angelina has amazing technique and playing skills, solid rhythm, beautiful interpretation of the tune and subtle placement of musical ornaments within the tunes that she plays …all these qualities make Angelina’s playing so very special. – Steve Noon, Eagle Music.

Angelina was born in Manchester in the late 70’s into a County Longford musical family steeped in traditional music. Starting on the tin whistle she later moved on to the tenor banjo following in the footsteps of her father Peter and Grandfather Kevin Carberry.

Angelina moved to Galway in the late 90’s where she recorded the highly acclaimed album ‘Memories from the Holla’ with her father Peter on accordion and John Blake on guitar and piano. Of this album Mairtin O’Connor said: “Simply a treasure to the ear and food for the soul”. Over the years, Angelina has developed a highly personal style with unique rhythmical characteristics. Her unmistakable banjo sound is captured on her solo 2005 CD, An Traidisún Beo, and 2014, Pluckin’ Mad reviewed by Daniel Neely of the New York Irish Echo, as ‘an album filled with enchanting music’.

Dan Brouder:
Dan Brouder is a well-respected exponent of the West Limerick accordion style from Monagae, a parish on the outskirts of Newcastle West. He learned his music in the surrounding parishes of Ardagh, Carrigkerry and Glin on the Sliabbh Luachra boundary from accordion player Donal de Barra, Athea Co.Limerick and from flute players Francis O’Connor and Donal O’Sullivan who learned their music from Peadlin Aherne, fiddle player and Pajo Gleesen flute player from the 1930’s and 40’s and whose styles are strongly bedded in West Limerick roots.

Dan Brouder & Angelina Carberry, New CD Album: ‘A Waltz for Joy’.
www.danbrouder.com
A Waltz for Joy is the first duet album from Accordion player Dan Brouder and Banjo player Angelina Carberry. Dan Brouder is a well-respected exponent of the West Limerick accordion style from Monagae, a parish on the outskirts of Newcastle West, Co. Limerick. Angelina Carberry, one of the most outstanding banjo players of her generation was born in Manchester into a musical family from Co. Longford steeped in traditional music.
A Waltz for Joy is a collection of old and new music, dating back to the 1860’s, collected and complied by Canon James Goodman from Dingle, Co. Kerry, called the Tunes of the Munster Pipers. Dan and Angelina have also included newly composed tunes from Charlie Lennon, Connie O’ Connell, Richard and John Dwyer Franke Gavin and Sean nos singer Nan Tom Taimin de Burca.
They are joined by Brian McGrath on Piano, John Blake, Guitar, Brian Mooney & Ruairi McGorman, Bouzouki’s, Johnny Ringo McDonagh Bodhran, James Blennerhassett, Bass, and Siri Snortheim, Cello.
“Cd adds to famous lineage. Angelina Carberry and Dan Brouder’s “Waltz for Joy” has made a special contribution to the long line of banjo/box combinations”.
Daniel Neely, Irish Echo New York

“This is an excellent recording showing two great musicians in their prime. The Flanagan Brothers made numerous recordings of accordion and banjo throughout the 1920s and Dan and Angelina carry on this tradition. They give the instruments a sweetness of sound that would not automatically be associated with accordion and banjo duets, while at the same time injecting something different into the pairing”
Rawbar, Online Traditional Irish Music Magazine

“A collection of Gems”
Frankie Gavin

“This is one of the best banjo and accordion duet recordings of all time”
Connie O’Connell

Brian McGrath:
Brian comes from Brookeborough, Co. Fermanagh, an area steeped in traditional music.

Brian’s first professional work was with Dervish. He then joined Four Men And A Dog and played on the award-winning album Barking Mad.
He moved his career on, accompanying Noel Hill, Paul Brock and Frankie Gavin, among others, before joining the Sean Keane Band as pianist.
Brian joined De Dannan where he stayed till the band broke up in 2003.

Brian now plays with At The Racket, and is much sought after as a session musician on piano, banjo and mandolin.
He has toured extensively, playing with all the biggest names in Irish traditional music, including Frankie Gavin, Noel Hill, John Carty, Matt Molloy, Paul Brock, Charlie Lennon, Joe Burke, Sean Maguire, Brian Rooney, Cathal Hayden, Joe Derrane, Arty McGlynn, Alec Finn, Alan Kelly, Angelina Carberry & Dan Brouder, Dolores Keane, Maura O’Connell, Tommy Fleming, Steve Cooney and Eleanor Shanley, as well as doing extensive TV and media work.

Brian’s Irish Tenor Banjo solo album  ‘Pure Banjo’ is much acclaimed in the traditional Irish music world, this excellent album also features Alec Finn, Arty McGlynn amongst others. Brian’s CD will be on sale at the Banjo 11 event.

Brian Mooney:
Brian Mooney originates from Brosna, Co. Kerry, an area steeped in Irish traditional music. He started learning the tin-whistle at the age of 6 and later progressed onto the banjo and bouzouki. Brian’s musical influences include Sliabh Luachra and West Limerick and later County Clare, where he lived and played regularly for a number of years.

Brian’s bouzouki accompaniment has featured on a number of albums over the past number of years. More recently Brian has been a member of the traditional group Caladh Nua and has toured America and Europe with the band.

Jonny Hulme:
Jonny is highly regarded in the UK as one of the most experienced, versatile, and creative banjo players of the modern era, and those that have already caught Jonny at a concert or workshop will know what we’re talking about! Jonny has actively taught for over twenty years, and takes immense pride and joy in the process of communicating and getting across to his students, to the best of his ability, all that is involved in his playing style of 5-string banjo

Coming from a non-musical family in south Manchester, out of the blue came an inspiration for Jonny to learn an ‘away from the norm’ instrument, and with his favourite band at the time being The Pogues, alongside fortunately having the natural ability to discern two particularly appealing sounding instruments from records, namely the banjo and mandola, he then decided to embark on the journey that has brought him to where he is today. He has enjoyed sharing the stage, recording with, and collaborating with some of world’s finest players over the years.

Jonny developed his playing style in the company of, and listening primarily to, musicians from both bluegrass and Celtic genres. The compositions he creates sit somewhere between these two musical feels.
Join Jonny for this fun and informative workshop, where he will talk you through and demonstrate his creative thinking & detailed techniques, in playing effective Celtic style tunes on 5-string. You can take away his examples, and have a crack at it yourself!

Handouts will be provided to visually aid understanding the content, and accompanying sound files will also be available to those that think they would be of benefit.

This workshop will be aimed at an easy to intermediate level of ability, with the only prerequisite being the basic ability to play ‘Scrugg’s style’ 3-finger picking rolls.

Celebrating your Ten Year Anniversary As The #1 Deering Dealer In The World
Dear Steve, Joan, Rachel and all the Eagle Music Team,
Eagle Music: A Decade of Dedication.
The magic of music transcends all boundaries. The magic of the banjo is sought after now by more people around the world than at any other time in history.
Eagle Music’s unwavering dedication to the banjo has introduced the joy and the life affirming magic of the banjo, to more people in the UK and Europe than any dealer in Deering’s 41 year history.
Only Eagle Music’s absolute commitment to serving customers could bring about this extraordinary level of achievement.
Eagle Music has been Deering’s number one dealer in the world every year since 2006.
This year, 2016, Eagle Music has again achieved this envied accolade which marks a full decade of Eagle Music as the Deering Banjo Company’s number one dealer worldwide.
On behalf of all of your happy customers and all of us at the Deering Banjo Company,
Thank you for ten outstanding years.
Signed: Greg and Janet Deering & Barry Hunn
